Wild West Dynasty is an upcoming survival game in the same vein as Medieval Dynasty.

It comes from the same publisher, Toplitz Productions, albeit from different developers, Moon Punch Studio.

The game recently released in early access on February 16th, 2023, and we put some hours in to see if this game might scratch the itch of those looking for the next Medieval Dynasty.

The Good

Admittedly, the game is quite rough in its current state.

Although it’s in early access, it’s more like it’s in “early” early access.

As such, there aren’t too many great things to say about it at this point, but there were a few things that stood out.

For one, the main story has great potential.

To avoid spoilers, we’ll just say it fits the Wild West theme well, and we look forward to exploring more of that story.

The other quests also are entertaining.

That said, the writing, itself, is a bit more problematic.

We’ll go over that in detail soon.

The structure of the game is another great aspect about it.

It looks to be following in the same footsteps as Medieval Dynasty with its use of different production houses, recruitment of townsfolk, and making money through production.

As of yet, there’s still a lot that needs implementing in that regard, but some of the production buildings we saw like the Sheriff, Blacksmith, and the numerous animal husbandry items seem interesting.

Finally, the devs have been working on fixes.

The game is buggy, to be sure.

The good news is the devs have been relatively quick to implement some fixes for some game-breaking bugs.

That gives us hope that the development team behind the game is committed to making it as great as they can.

The Bad

While there are some good things about Wild West Dynasty, at this stage, there’s mostly bad things.

For one, the performance is a bit rough.

Although that’s expected of early access games, the amount of stuttering and lagging we’re getting is a bit surprising.

According to reviews of Steam, some players have also had problems with crashes.

While we haven’t encountered any crashes, we have experienced our fair share of stuttering and lagging.

There are also some odd spawning issues with the wildlife in the game.

They’re at one distance when you look at them, but if you turn away, then look at them again, they’re suddenly in a different location as if they were teleporting.

It’s a bit odd and can be annoying when they happen to teleport right on you and start biting at your legs.

The building is also a bit clunky which isn’t ideal since you need to build to progress in the game.

Hopefully, they implement some fixes to make the building process a bit smoother and less gimmicky.

Combat also needs some work.

Ranged combat, in particular, seems to have some sort of problem hitting its target even though you’re aimed directly at what you’re hitting.

There’s something off with the collision or something.

These are just some of the bugs or problems we’ve encountered.

The Ugly

Finally, the game, as a whole, does not look great.

While that’s partially to be expected since it’s in early access and these graphics are likely placeholders, it’s still slightly worrying.

The game is very brown.

While it’s understandable that this is a desert setting and it’s going to be very earthy, there isn’t enough to break up that brown.

To make matters worse, all the UI is also brown.

It’s brown on brown which can make it difficult to see certain things.

It doesn’t attract the eye, essentially.

Finally, the quest system is a bit broken as well.

Objective completions don’t always save.

As such, you often need to complete the quest fully before logging off or else risk losing all your progress and having to do it again.

The writing of some of the side quests is also a bit childish.

No one speaks as they live in the 1800s Wild West.

They have a modern manner of speech which can be a bit jarring and immersion-breaking.

The ugly thing is we’re not sure if the writing is going to change.

Conclusion

In all, Wild West Dynasty has some potential to be a great game.

However, in its current state, it’s very rough even for an early access game.

That said, we’ll be continuing to cover it with the hopes that the developing team will continue to give it the love that it needs.

For those looking to try it out for yourselves, we suggest holding off on buying the game at its current state.

Give it a few months for the devs to take care of more bugs and implement more content.
