It’s tough surviving out there in a forest filled with cannibals.

Building a base is one of the first steps you should take in Sons of the Forest to store your items, sleep safely, and give yourself a bit of a breather.

In this survival guide, we’ll be covering a few different ways you can build a base including a mobile option.

Pre-Fabricated Bases Offer A Quick Way To Get A Base Down

One of the first options for your base is to choose one of the pre-fabricated options in the building menu.

For those who have played The Forest before, these pre-frab options should look familiar to you.

You have a few different options like the treehouse, hunter base, log cabin, and a handful of others.

To access them, you first need to bring up the building menu which you do by clicking the “B” button.

This will bring up a building guide with two different parts.

If the guide is on your right-hand side, then that’s the instruction manual.

Its purpose is to show you the resources you need to build customizable walls, bases, and other items.

If you press and hold “X” you can switch the guide to your left-hand side.

This is where all the pre-fabricated options reside.

They provide a blueprint that you just need to fill with resources to build.

If the guide isn’t on your left-hand side, then hold “X” to get there now.

Then turn the pages until you reach the bases section.

To make the pre-fabricated, basic, shelters, follow these recipes:

  • Hunting Shelter:
    • 5 Logs
    • 6 Sticks
    • 7 Stones
  • Small Log Cabin:
    • 75 Logs
  • Lean To:
    • 53 Logs
  • Tree Shelter 1:
    • 70 Logs
    • 1 Rope
  • Tree Shelter 2:
    • 96 Logs

Keep in mind that some of the structures will require half-logs, quarter-logs, or even planks to finish them.

Pre-fabricated shelters are great for those who aren’t looking to make their own bases.

They offer safe places for you to sleep and save the game.

The downside is that they don’t always offer a lot of space or security.

It won’t take long for a cannibal to destroy your hunting shelter, for example.

That’s where making your own bases can come in handy.

Custom Bases Provide Better Security and Storage

Those who love building their own, custom, bases are going to find custom building satisfying in Sons of the Forest.

They’ve improved the building system from The Forest.

To see how to make custom bases, and other structures, you’ll want to press the “B” button once more.

This time, you’ll want the guide to be on the right-hand side of the screen.

Then you can navigate through the different pages to see the different structures you can build.

Armed with that knowledge, you’re able to start putting down logs and get building.

You don’t have to put down a blueprint and fill it.

Instead, you’re basically using the resources and building as you go.

Sons of the Forest also allows you to use structural elements to create some unique bases.

You can make your base as expansive and intricate as you want or keep it fairly basic.

The benefits of a custom base are rather obvious.

You’re able to make it exactly how you want it.

That might provide you with more storage space or it can let you beef up your defenses.

The downside is that custom bases tend to take a bit longer to make.

They often need more resources, especially if you’re making a large base.

For those who plan on spending a lot of time in the game, a custom base may be worth your while.

Mobile Bases Let You Save On The Go

A common problem with traversing in The Forest is that being able to save was few and far between.

Sons of the Forest fixes that problem with its use of mobile bases.

All you need to make this base is a single tarp and stick.

You can find tarps in storage containers.

Building a mobile base is also easy.

You need to first get into your inventory and click on the tarp, so you’re holding it in your hands.

Then set it down in an area where you want the base.

Once it’s on the ground, go back into your inventory and select a stick.

You should see a dashed line appear on one of the edges of the tarp while you’re holding the stick.

Click the dashed line, and your character will prop up the tarp with the stick.

You’re now able to use the tarp as a base.

This is great for traveling through the forest and saving before you enter a cave or even during it.

Mobile bases are very vulnerable, however.

It won’t take much effort at all for a cannibal or even yourself to break it.

The good news is that it’s relatively easy to fix and remake.

When traveling around, consider using a mobile base.

Conclusion

Bases are one of the most important features in Sons of the Forest.

Whether you go pre-fab, custom, or mobile, the game has plenty of options for everyone.
