Food is an essential part of staying alive in Sons of the Forest.

Without it, your stamina will decrease, and you’ll find it harder to fight and perform other physical actions in the game.

In this survival guide, we’ll be covering the different ways that you can acquire food in Sons of the Forest.

Use Traps To Passively Gather Food

Sons of the Forest offers a few different types of traps to use as you will.

Two of those are primarily for collecting food.

There’s a hunting trap that lets you trap small animals like squirrels and rabbits.

There’s also a fishing trap that lets you ensnare fish.

Here are the recipes you’ll need to make both traps.

  • Small Animal Trap:
    • 14 Sticks
  • Fish Trap:
    • 25 Sticks

To get the most out of your small animal trap, you’ll want to put it in a location where small animals tend to gather.

They won’t do you much good in an area that doesn’t have a lot of animals.

Fish traps also do well in larger bodies of water.

They don’t always work well in rivers.

Setting up some traps can be a great way to store up on food for the winter.

Hunting Can Quickly Net You Some Food

If you want to have a more hands-on experience, then you might want to start hunting.

There is an abundant of different ways you can hunt in the game.

You’re able to make a bow, you start off with an axe, and you can also acquire guns.

There are also tons of animals in the game to hunt, too.

You can travel deep into the woods to try and find deer which provide a good deal of food and other resources.

You can also scrounge along the beach and take down turtles and seagulls.

For my own playthrough, since I live on the coast, I tend to stick with hunting turtles and seagulls.

The birds, especially, are normally in abundance, so I can quickly gather a bunch of meat in a small amount of time.

Hunting does take away time from doing other things, however, so it’s best to hunt in conjunction with some of the other methods mentioned.

Fishing Can Quickly Gain You Food Too

If you live by a river, lake, or the ocean, then you’re basically set for food.

Kelvin is an amazing fisher.

You can tell him to gather fish for you while standing close to a body of water.

Although it takes him a bit of time, and he does become tired after awhile, he can easily gather you a ton of fish.

You’ll have more than you can eat in no time.

Now, fishing isn’t always possible for people who live near lakes.

The lakes freeze over during the winter.

As such, you may need to have Kelvin fish near the river instead.

You can also fish.

All you need is your axe.

Then you just travel down the river, hunt through the lake, or scour the shores of the ocean.

When you see a fish, strike at it with your axe or another weapon, to kill it.

Farming Can Increase Your Berries

Farming is another way you can get food in Sons of the Forest.

To farm, you’re going to need to make a planter.

There are two different types of planters that you can make in the game.

Here are the recipes for both types.

  • Standing Planter:
    • 18 Sticks
  • Wall Planter:
    • 16 Sticks

Once your planter is made, you can pop a seed into it by pressing and holding the “E” button.

There are a number of different seeds you can plant.

Berries, like blueberries, are edible.

Other plants are useable for making herbal remedies that heal or boost your energy.

You can grow them all to keep your stock up.

Try Out These Tips To Make Gathering Food Successful

While those are the main methods you can use to acquire food in the game, there are a few more tips you can use to get the most out of them.

For one, you can make a drying rack to increase food storage as well as keep your food lasting longer.

A drying rack dries your food, so it becomes jerky.

It lasts a lot longer than just cooked food.

To make the drying rack, you’ll need 13 sticks.

Then you just press and hold the “E” button to access your quick inventory.

You can pop meat on the drying rack to start the drying process.

Not only does this give you a way to store food for later, but it can make your food last longer.

Another tip is to watch your food when you’re cooking it on the campfire.

Burnt food has minimal effect on your food meter and can even decrease your water.

As such, you want to watch your food while it’s cooking.

Once you see the meat turn brown, pick it up, and eat it.

You’ll get the most food and water from it if you eat it right after cooking it.

Conclusion

There are tons of different ways to get food and stay well fed in Sons of the Forest.

Using the tips above can also help you make the most of your food.
