Coal can be difficult to find in some cases in Return to Moria because each level is randomly generated.
That said, knowing what to look for and a few mining tips might help your search.
In this survival guide, we’ll show you where to find coal in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.
To see the process for yourself, be sure to watch the video below!
What Does Coal Look Like in Return to Moria
It can be difficult to know what you’re looking for if you haven’t seen a coal vein yet.
It’s also easy to mistake it for an iron vein.
A coal vein has a similar orange hue like iron, but you’re going to look for a large concentration of black.

Iron veins typically don’t have black specks on them.
A coal vein will have lots of black that sit on top of the rusty color.
When you see this type of vein, pull out your pickaxe, and hover over it.
With some luck, it will read “coal.”
Where Can You Find Coal in Return to Moria
Because each segment of the mine is randomly generated, the exact area for one player won’t typically be the same for another player.
That said, you’re going to need to look at the cave walls.
Look for the black on orange ore that indicates a coal vein.
You can also dig through rock, a light-grey material, and sometimes stumble upon veins.
There’s a chance that one of those veins might be coal.
So, if you can’t find any coal in your area, then you’ll need to either dig deeper into the mines, dig through some rock, or look at some of the destroyed blacksmith buildings.
You can sometimes find coal in those buildings on the pallets.
So, grab your pickaxe and start mining!
