By the time you start exploring the Western Halls, it’s clear that your iron sword isn’t going to be much help.
You need steel weapons to take care of the stronger orcs and bosses throughout the area.
In this survival guide, we’ll show you how to unlock and craft steel weapons in Return to Moria.
To see how they perform, be sure to watch the video below!
How To Unlock Steel Weapons in Return to Moria

There are two steel weapons you can unlock in Return to Moria’s Western Halls.
They include the steel sword and the steel battleaxe.
If you want one or both, you’re going to need to repair statues throughout the Western Halls area.
Each statue requires 20 stone and a steel hammer to repair them.
The problem with the statues in the Western Halls is that there’s so many of them.
You may need to repair several statues before you get the full recipe unlocked.
That’s because both the sword and battleaxe have two recipe fragments.
You need to repair at least two statues for each one to fully unlock its recipe.
How To Craft Steel Weapons in Return to Moria

Both the steel sword and steel battleaxe are weapons you can craft in a forge at your base.
They don’t require a special forge like the Great Forge of Narvi.
They also don’t use rare resources, so these are both weapons you can make early on when you enter the Western Halls for the first time.
The resources you need to craft them run thus:
- Steel Sword: 3 Steel Ingots, 4 Elven Wood, 1 Hide
- Steel Battleaxe: 3 Steel Ingots, 1 Elven Wood, 2 Hide
Once you’ve crafted both weapons, or the one that you want to use, you can equip them and start slaying orcs.
Steel Weapon Stats
Both the steel sword and steel battleaxe are great for specific situations.
The steel sword is a one-handed slashing weapon that can hit and stagger multiple enemies with one swing.
When you charge up your swing, it does a lot of damage to one particular enemy that you target.
I like to use the steel sword for crowd control or use it with a shield when up against a single, strong, enemy.
The steel battleaxe is a two-handed weapon that deals slashing damage.
It also staggers enemies when you swing it, but it’s primarily good at hurting large enemies with the charge attack.
When you perform a charged attack, the battleaxe can cause a lot of damage against enemies who are large.
Big orcs, cave trolls, and mini-bosses are especially weak to it.
So, if you have a mini-boss fight coming up and the enemy is large, then you may want to consider bringing along your steel battleaxe.
With these two weapons in your arsenal, your travels through the Western Halls will be a lot safer.
